What is Brick Pointing?

Pointing brick is the process of filling or repairing the outer 10-20mm of mortar joints between bricks to improve weather resistance, structural integrity, and aesthetics. This process involves removing damaged, old mortar and applying fresh mortar to protect against moisture infiltration.

At Paradise Construction, we specialize in repointing brickwork by removing deteriorated mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar, preserving the masonry’s integrity and enhancing the building’s appearance. We also offer tuck pointing, a specialized technique that uses two contrasting mortar colors to create clean, fine joint lines, often used on historic brickwork and brownstones. Our expert team assesses signs of mortar deterioration, including crumbling mortar, hairline cracks in the brick or mortar, and significant mortar erosion.

Difference Between Tuck Pointing, Brick Pointing & Spot Pointing

These three services are often confused, but each one handles a different type of mortar repair.

Here is how they differ from each other and how we deal with them:

  • Brick Pointing: Brick pointing (also called repointing) is the standard repair. We remove damaged mortar from the joints and replace it with fresh mortar that matches your existing brickwork. This is the go-to fix for worn, cracked, or crumbling mortar across a wall or full facade.
  • Tuck Pointing: Tuck pointing is a more detailed technique. It uses two contrasting mortar colors, one that blends with the brick and a fine line on top, to create clean, crisp joint lines. This is often used on historic brownstones and decorative brickwork where appearance matters as much as structure.
  • Spot Pointing: Spot pointing is a smaller, targeted repair. Instead of working across an entire wall, we focus on isolated areas where the mortar has failed, such as around cracks, loose bricks, or water-damaged spots. It’s a quicker, more affordable option when the damage is limited.

At Paradise Construction, we assess your brickwork and recommend the right approach based on the condition of the mortar, the type of building, and your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

When done properly with the right mortar, brick pointing typically lasts 25 to 30 years. Lifespan depends on weather exposure, building age, and whether the correct mortar mix was used.

Repointing replaces failing mortar with a single matching color. Tuck pointing uses two contrasting colors to create fine, decorative joint lines. Both restore the wall, but tuck pointing adds visual detail.

Costs vary based on building size, access, and damage level. Small spot pointing jobs start low, while full-building repointing runs higher. We provide free, written estimates with no hidden charges.

Mortar cures best between 40°F and 90°F, so spring through fall is ideal. We can work in colder months using cold-weather mortar and protective enclosures when the project can't wait.

Yes. We match mortar to the original formulation, usually softer lime-based mixes for older buildings, and follow Landmarks Preservation Commission guidelines when required for brownstones and pre-war properties.
